Medusavest
“Medusa,” in Greek meaning, “guardian or protectress,” is the main inspiration of my garment. In Medusa’s mythology, you would not want to be visible to this fearsome goddess. Otherwise, you'd turn into stone. The functionality of my piece plays the opposite – I want the user to be as visible as possible during a dust storm on the Red Planet. The vest has recharging batteries in case of unforeseen misfortune. Imagine yourself standing tall, confident, and powerful. Yes, POWERFUL!
Medusavest is designed to generate power as the wind spins the turbine, making it an environmentally-friendly and sustainable piece. Aesthetically, the Medusavest is constructed by plastic snakes wrapping around the upper body, much to the resemblance of Medusa's fierce appearance in the mythology. The vest is in gold to represent Mesusa's elite power and her "stone-hard" royalty. The garment includes one main turbine, which is attached to the back of the vest. This is embedded with a charging station, which will help the LED to light up. Thus, by using the vest, you will be more visible while walking through the terrible dust storms of Mars, preventing you from getting lost.
'메두사 베스트'
그리스/로마 신화에 나오는 "메두사"는 원래 보호의 여신이었다. '메두사 베스트'의 영감을준 인물이기도하다. 신화에 나오는 메두사는 매서운 눈매로 자신과 눈을 마주치는 불행한 자를 딱딱한 돌로 변신시키는 힘을 가지고 있으나 '메두사 베스트'는 신화의 메두사 이야기와는 정 반대로 화성의 강한 황사속에서 눈에 잘 띄게하는 역할을 해준다.
'메두사 베스트'는 재충전 건전지를 사용해 자원이 부족한 환경속에서도 아무 염려없는 탐험을 약속해준다.
아직 인류에게는 의문으로 가득한 황량한 화성의 토지에서 자신있고 흥미진진한 모험을 할수있게 도와주는 특별한 도구이다. 풍력 발전 터빈을 이용해서 화성의 풍성한 바람으로 에너지를 자동으로 생산하게된다.
신화에 나오는 메두사의 무시무시한 뱀으로 만들어진 머릿카락처럼 '메두사 베스트'는 금빛의 뱀들이 상체를 둘러싸고 있으며 금색은 메두사의 왕족과 세력을 상징한다. 베스트 뒷쪽에는 주 터빈이 부착되어있고 충전 스테이션이 내장되어있어 LED를 작동시킨다. 따라서, '메두사 베스트'를 착용하면 화성의 강한 황사속을 걷는 동안에도 앞길을 밝혀주며 다른 모함가들의 눈에도 쉽게 띄게되어 길을 잃지 않게된다.
Mercury Shoes
With sustainable energy and environmental conservation as a core interest for many scientists, entrepreneurs, politicians, educators, and young thinkers today, there have been numerous projects and products designed to sustain energy. Mercury Shoes – formerly called “Energy Shoes” – are designed to emulate the mechanical algorithm and energy conservation goals of Uncharted Play, Inc’s creation, the Soccket (http://www.unchartedplay.com/). Soccket is a soccer ball that restores kinetic energy from kicking impact and converts it into usable electric energy to charge batteries, lamps, etc. Mercury Shoes translate this engineering concept into a form of shoes. Impact between the shoes and the ground collects Kinetic Energy and stores it into usable electrical energy. This energy can be used to charge electronic devices with or without mobility.
How did “Energy Shoes” become “Mercury Shoes”? Inspired by the powerful shoes of Roman god Mercury (Greek: Hermes) from Roman mythology, Mercury Shoes intend to supply power and guidance to those who embark on an adventure to Mars, as the patron god of travelers and boundaries does. The first colonization on Mars is bound to be risky, and it may be a repetition of trial and error. They are a crucial component to surviving on the Red Planet due to lack of resources during initial stages of human exploration and potential colonization.
With designing a product for Mars, we are given the creative agency to make something heavy and bulky to overcome lower gravitational force on this planet compared to Earth. This is a backwards trend from prevalent product designs on Earth, which is aimed at making something lightweight and minimalistic. While retaining its functionality of energy storage, Mercury Shoes will embody some of the literal designs of Mercury’s iconic shoes.
'머큐리 신발'
수많은 과학자, 기업가, 정치인, 교육자, 및 젊은 사상가들에게 지속 가능 에너지 및 환경 보전을 핵심 관심으로두고 에너지를 유지하도록 설계된 수많은 프로젝트 및 제품들이 출시되고있다. '머큐리 신발' (이전에는 '에너지 신발'이라 불렸으며)은 Uncharted Play, Inc의 창작물 Soccket (http://www.unchartedplay.com/)의 기계적 알고리즘과 에너지 보존 목표를 모방하도록 디자인되었다. Soccket은 충격으로부터 운동 에너지를 복구하고 건전지, 램프, 등을 충전하기 위해 사용 가능한 전기 에너지로 변환하는 축구 공이다. Mercury Shoes는 이 공학 개념을 신발 형태로 변환했다. 신발과 땅 사이의 충돌은 운동 에너지를 수집하여 사용 가능한 전기 에너지로 저장하게된다. 이 에너지는 이동성이 있거나 없는 전자 장치를 충전하는 데 사용될수 있다.
'에너지 신발'은 어떻게 '머큐리 신발'이 되었는지를 보자면 '머큐리 신발'은 그리스 로마 신화의 로마 신 Mercury (그리스어 : Hermes)의 강력한 신발에서 영감을 얻어 여행자와 경계의 수호신으로서 화성에 모험을 시작하는 사람들에게 힘과 용기를 주고 안내를 해주고자한다. 화성 탐험의 초창기는 위험할수밖에 없으며, 시행착오의 반복이기 마련일것이다. 그러므로써 머큐리 신발은 자원이 부족한 '붉은 행성,' (즉 화성)에서 생존하는데에 중요한 요소가 될것이다.
화성 제품을 설계할 때 지구와 비교적으로 중력이 훨씬 낮은 화성의 환경을 극복하는데에는 무겁고 부피가 큰 것으로 만들어야한다. 어찌보면 가볍고 미니멀리즘을 추구하는 지구상의 널리 보급된 제품 설계의 후향추세이기도하다. '머큐리 신발'은 에너지 저장 기능을 유지하면서 머큐리의 상징적인 날개달린 신발을 구체화한다.
